Let's celebrate this Librarians Day in a different way

S R Ranganathan, a father figure for library science or for modern day world Information Science is an inspiration for all.  A person who took up a job of revamping libraries in a time when the India's independence struggle was on high. I mean can you imagine a time when the Gandhis, the Bhagat Singhs were the face of Indian people and nobody gave a damn about the libraries. Ranganathan, as a mathematics professor could also  have a silent life of being a mathematics professor at the Madras University or he could have also joined the India's freedom struggle like many youths of his age, but he chose something he cared about which India will need after its freedom to make it a better country, an  of course that too with no expectation. He dedicated his life to something that has no ground existence that time. But his dedication leads to development of  profession which people didn't thought of. A profession which is noble, which is challenging, and of course which give you satisfaction.
But today we the library professionals think our profession as very tough, we link societies view point to our profession, we complain about limited resources, we complain about less respect to our profession and many more, in a time when information is thought of to be the fourth primery need of human survival like  Roti, Kapda or Makan. But do you really think if Ranganthan has have thought all these bulshits that time, we would have existed now. Obviously there would have been no existence of us, the library profession. Do you  think a person who did so much for the society, for the country  and for humanity, will he be happy if we celebrate his birthday by talking only about his works but not learn anything from his life. 
So let's celebrate this librarians day in a different way and learn from our Father's life which actually tells us to lead a happy life not only in our profession but also in our day to day life.

• Take up challenges: Always ready to take challenge, Don't run way from it. Face it, Fight wth it and Conquer it, like Ranganathan did. 

• Do Duty without expectation: Don't always expect some praise from others for every little work you do. Ranganathan didn't expected anything for his duties, but he is followed now all over the world, why? Because, he was dedicated. 

• Think of the Society: Always think of the society, what society needs is your need and you are the one who can fulfill it. A small work for the society makes a big impact. 

• Don't complain, you yourself is the best resource: Don't complain about limited resources you have. Ranganathan didn't had any support, but he did because he knew he can. So next time you make excuse think of Ranganathan. You have the knowledge,you have the internet. Start serving information for all.

• Communicate with people, understand others feeling: Ranganathan sai,"If you want to be a good reference librarian, you must learn to overcome not only yourshyness but also the shyness of others." Take this line in mind ALWAYS!!

•  Follow his five laws: The five laws are the best guideline for serving information, don't just remember it, but implement it in day do day life. That would be best respect for him.

So, let's celebrate this librarians day in a different way, its not only a birthday but a day to follow a saint's legacy, and his learning.

Best Ways to increase Citations To Your Articles

In the research community citations to previous researchers work is counted as an acknowledgement to their previous work. It is something like that another scientist has used someone’s work and has acknowledged that work. Now a day’s citations are an important part of evaluating research works of scientists in bibliometric researches. So it’s very important for researchers to get citations for their scholarly works so as to increase their impact as an impactful scientist. Here are some simple tips how a scientist can increase citations to their scholarly works:

• Publishing in high impact factor journals: Impact Factor is a quality through which the journal quality is measured. You can see the impact factor of journals in their publisher’s website. So before publishing an article the author should try to list out some of the most high impact factor journals in his research area and see the quality of works they are publishing. The author should then try to cope up with that quality and try to publish in those journals.

•   Current and trendy topics usually get more citations: Articles written on the current happenings of a particular area usually tends to get more citations. So researchers should try to publish in those evolving areas as the probability of further research in new areas is higher than classical areas which are already well established.

• .Title of the article: The title of the article should be such that it clearly reflects what the whole article is all about. Don’t use titles which are of dual meanings. Try to avoid long titles and sub title. Titles should be short, but should clearly reflect the content. Short titles help search engines to mine the article and give top priority in their search results.

•  Selection of keyword: Any article you publish in journal you have to give at least five keywords that are discussed in the content. As you are a master of an area so you should use those keywords only which you usually use with your fellow researchers. Those keywords should be repeatedly used while preparing your abstract also as these keywords are important for search engine results.

• Publishing in Open access journals increases probability of getting citations: Open access journals do not need any fees for accessing. For Open access articles the viewing audience increases therefore the sub-set of people who is going to cite your article also increases. There are high impactful open access journals in every field. You can find such journals in www.doaj.org (Directory of Open Access Journals).

• .       Use Social media: Share your publications in social media platforms where you can find lot of your fellow colleagues or people with similar research interests. Sharing of whole papers may not be allowed by your journals publishers but you can always share up to abstract level. Don’t forget to share the full links of the papers along with the abstract.

• .       A single common name for you in all the publications: If you have used short form of your name in your previous publications (Like J P Smith for John peter Smith) then you should always use the same name for your later publications also. A uniform name helps others to identify you by other researchers. It also helps to track your citations. So a uniform name all over your publications is helpful.

• .       Use repositories for your benefit: Now every research institute or educational institutes has build up their repositories for showcasing their institute’s  scholarly works. Publishers also allow their authors to preserve their works in repositories after a stipulated time after the publication. The repositories helps your institute members to access your article.

• .       Promote your work among your students and colleagues: You should share your research work to your students which will share that to their friends. You can use mailing lists to share your article to your colleagues also. If you are a scholar then you can share it with our other fellow scholars. This invisible college is an easy way to circulate one’s research work.
